D6.4 – Guidelines for the sustainable exploitation of pilot areas for bioenergy production
This deliverable is based on the SEEMLA task related on the suitability assessment of the available MagLs for bioenergy production by compiling the interim results of WP4.
On the basis of the catalogue of MagLs exploitation practices for bioenergy production (Task 2.1 and 2.2) and the types of MagLs identified as available for exploitation (Task 6.1), alternative exploitation strategies are developed for each MagL type. The result is a refinement of the available MagLs into a subset of suitable MagLs for bioenergy production accompanied by the respective exploitation practices.
Such an assessment provides useful information mainly for land use planning (policy development) at a regional level, therefore exploitation scenarios are developed for the pilot areas (not only the pilot sites).
The scenarios cover the most common exploitation practices of each MagL type and bioenergy crop. Moreover, the scenarios are categorised based on their key elements to reflect three alternatives: environmental – intermediate – economic priorities. Scenarios will be subject to environmental and socioeconomic assessment by WP4, on the basis of indicative but reliable data provided by the partners involved.
The results of the environmental and socioeconomic assessment will provide a rational and quantitative assessment of various exploitation scenarios. The scenarios are rated advantageous, disadvantageous or neutral compared to the respective conventional reference scenario.
