Responsible for the Greek sites is SEEMLA partner DAMT. Sites are located within forest areas of the region of Thrace around the city of Komotini.

Ecological conditions – climate
The region is characterized by Mediterranean climate conditions with a dry summer season and the maximum precipitation during the winter months. The De Martonne Aridity Index for this weather station was calculated as 16.8 indicating semiarid climatic conditions. The sites were selected as potential marginal sites for biomass production in forest areas.

Ecological conditions – soil properties
The Greek sites often show clear limitations with regard to hard rock close to the surface and shallow or very shallow soils with limited rooting zones. Stones and boulders at the surface were generally of great importance at the Greek case study sites Drosia and Pelagia. Massive occurrence of coarse fragments at the surface is a very serious limitation for agricultural use and therefore a clear sign of marginality. This is also true for high amounts of stones and other fragments within the soil.
